On Dec. 24, it rained quite a lot in the Portland area, but we will never know how much.

That is because at this time of the year (late fall), the feature called “Your Local Forecast” on the back page of the Telegram’s Maine/New England section reports only the previous 24-hour snowfall.

Especially in this time of drought, many of us, I believe, would like to know how much precipitation Portland receives, no matter in which form.
