BIDDEFORD  — The first baby of the year born at Southern Maine Health Center was welcomed into the world at 9:43 a.m. Jan. 1.

Kayleigh Henderson and Tyler Longmore of Saco celebrated the birth of their newborn son, 7 pounds, 1 ounce Elliott Charles Longmore.

Elliott and his parents received a gift cart filled with items donated by SMHC, volunteers and community members. The cart included diapers, clothing, home and bath items, bottles, bowls and spoons, books, a stuffed animal and a gift card.

“Time flies whether you realize it or not, and for us time flew,” said Henderson. “It wasn’t until the morning my water broke that reality set in. This was the day. The day where your life changes forever.  Excitement filled my body and tears littered my face. Not a single person or action can prepare you for such a glorious blessing. In a moment’s time, everything stands still and you forget about the struggles and pain. All you have now is a beautiful child and a beautiful bond.”

The couple said they are grateful for the love and support of family and friends.

“Words can’t explain our gratitude, but in the near future Tyler, Elliott and I will pay it forward.  Even though he was a few days late, God blessed us with one of his many angels, on New Year’s Day and we couldn’t have asked for anything more,” said Henderson.

Elliott, along with all other Maine resident babies born in 2017, will be eligible to receive a $500 grant through the Harold Alfond College Challenge to start a NextGen College Investing Plan account.

The Alfond Scholarship Foundation set up the grant program to help ensure access to higher education for all Maine’s children.
