Friends of Fort Sumner Park is a group of residents who have come together to preserve the park’s views of Back Cove, the city of Portland and Mount Washington, and its history as one of Portland’s early forts.

We ended year 2016 with the great news on the Portland City Council’s willingness to preserve the wonderful views, and essential character, of Fort Sumner Park on North Street in Portland. This will allow the city to create policy to protect the integrity of, and views from, historic Fort Sumner Park.

The work is not finished. At Tuesday’s meeting, the Planning Board will consider staff recommendations for protecting the park’s character, which will be forwarded to the City Council for action.

As the meeting is a workshop session, with no opportunity for public comment (this will come later at a public hearing when the Planning Board makes recommendation to the council), please email your support for the park to planningboard@portlandmaine.gov.

Please also show your support for the park by attending Tuesday’s Planning Board meeting at 7:30 p.m. at City Hall, Room 209.
