SCARBOROUGH — Daniel J. Curlew died peacefully in his sleep and into the arms of God, Jan. 16, 2017.

Born in Portland Maine on July 1, 1928, Dan was a lifelong learner, a strong man of God and an avid motorcyclist. He rode his 1973 Honda and mowed his own lawn well into his 80s. Dan was a deacon, Sunday school teacher, and faithful member of the Baptist faith since he joined the church in his early 20s. Anyone who loved Dan, or even met him, knew he had a quick wit and a generous spirit, unless you were asking for directions at the Sunoco station he owned and operated for over 40 years.

Dan was son of William Curlew and Frances French; brother to Charlotte Quellette, Margarette Haggan, Ralph Curlew and William Curlew. Dan is survived by his loving wife Geraldine DePeter Curlew and was well-loved by his children by birth and marriage: Daniel C. Curlew, Carolyn Curlew Crowley, Stephen Curlew, Timothy Curlew, Julia Curlew, Mary Ellen Curlew, Susan Curlew, Donald Crowley, and Cheryl Curlew. He was grandfather to 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He will be missed by all.

The family would like to thank Hospice of Southern Maine for their extraordinary care and support and all our friends and family who have been a presence and comfort to Dan and his loved ones.

Visiting hours will be held at Hobbs Funeral Home, 671 US Route 1, Scarborough, ME from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 19, 2017. The funeral service will be held at Scarborough Free Baptist Church, 55 Mussey Road, Scarborough, ME at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 20, 2017; reception immediately following at the church.
