WEST PARIS (AP) — A minor earthquake has been recorded in western Maine.

The United States Geological Survey reports the 2.1-magnitude earthquake happened shortly before 5 p.m. on Saturday near West Paris, Maine.

Residents living near the area reported hearing a loud boom and felt shaking.

Small earthquakes aren’t unusual in Maine. The state typically has a couple a year.

The largest quake in Maine over the last 40 years was a magnitude 4 in 2012 near Hollis Center.

The biggest earthquake ever recorded in the state was a 5.1 magnitude in 1904.
