Workshops at Norumbega Yurts

Want to shake off those mid-winter blues? There will be two workshops at the Norumbega Yurts on Saturday, Feb. 11, to quiet the mind and nurture the body.

From 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., learn about Ayurveda, the traditional yoga system of medicine focused on prevention and natural healing through strengthening of the body and the spirit. Learn the basics of an ayurvedic diet and enjoy a light vegetarian lunch of red lentil dal and tulsi and chai tea. The cost for the workshop and lunch is $70.

A second workshop of classical yoga will be held from 2-4 p.m. This will be a simple, slow and gentle yoga. The cost is $40.

Pisgah Hill Full Moon Trek

Join members and supporters of the Royal River Conservation Trust on Saturday, Feb. 10, from 5-8 p.m., for the free, sixth annual full moon snowshoe evening at Pisgah Hill Preserve south trailhead, 74 Dougherty Road, near the New Gloucester-Pownal town line. Climb to the summit of Pisgah Hill Preserve through the setting sun to witness the rising of the full snow moon. Enjoy a warming campfire and mingle with your friends, old and new.

The trail is well marked and typically lighted with luminaries for the return. Organizers recommend bringing snowshoes, poles, a flashlight or headlamp, blanket, water and lots of good cheer. The trailhead has a small parking lot which fills quickly. Most vehicles are asked to line the shoulder of Dougherty Road. For more details, see www.rrct.org.

Tricky Britches at Village Coffeehouse

Raised in Maine, cured on street corners and next to woodstoves, string-band Tricky Britches is a unique combination of country, contra-dance, bluegrass and rock. Their musicians have played concerts and festivals across the United States, Europe and Hawaii, being shaped by experiences at those places to inspire their original music.

Tricky Britches is scheduled to perform from 7:30-9:30 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 4, at the Village Coffeehouse, which is located in the vestry community room of the First Congregational Church, 19 Gloucester Hill Road. Admission at the door is $10. Call 653-4823 for more information.

Snowshoe adventure

Families are invited to join in on a snowshoe trek through the farm yard and fields at Pineland Farms, become familiar with the basics of snowshoeing and finish off the morning with a cup of hot chocolate.

This family program, occurring on Tuesday, Feb. 14, from 10-11:30 a.m., is recommended for children ages 3 and up. If they’re too young to snowshoe on their own, parents are encouraged to carry them by backpack. The start and finish location is the Education Barn, 100B Valley Farm Road.

The cost is $5 per person, and pre-registration is required due to a limited number of snowshoes available for rent. Tickets are non-refundable. Call the Education Department at 650-3031 to reserve a spot.

New artifacts on display

The next monthly New Gloucester History Barn Open House will be held on Saturday, Feb. 4, and will feature items recently acquired for the New Gloucester Historical Society’s collection. The barn is located at 383 Intervale Road, Route 231, behind the Town Hall. The exhibit is open to the public from 9 a.m.-noon.

Reminisce over postcards

“New Gloucester Postcards and the Stories They Tell” is the title of a program to be presented by Jerry Davis on Thursday, Feb. 16, 7 p.m., at the New Gloucester Meetinghouse, 389 Intervale Road. The talk is free and open to the public. Complimentary refreshments are available.

Ernest Rogers and Heather Phinney of Stillbrook Acres provide horse-drawn sleigh rides around Pineland Farms on Jan. 21. According to Phinney, all seven rides available were sold out.

Reps. Dale Denno, D-Cumberland, and Susan Austin, R-Gray, welcomed members of the Gray-New Gloucester High School Band to the State House Tuesday, Jan. 31. The band performed the national anthem in the Maine House of Representatives during the day’s opening ceremonies.
