NEWPORT — Mt. Ararat/Brunswick knocked off defending state champion Skowhegan to win the team championship, and Skowhegan’s Cody Craig moved closer to a fourth straight individual state title by winning his weight class in the Class A North wrestling regional Saturday at Nokomis High.

Mt. Ararat sent six wrestlers to the championship round and had eight qualifiers for the state meet next Saturday in Rockport. The Eagles finished with 152.5 points – 23 more than Skowhegan.

Jabbar Belin (126 pounds), Robert Hetherman (170) and Dylan Schenk (220) earned individual titles for Mt. Ararat. Hetherman, the reigning state champion, won by technical fall in the championship match; Belin and Schenk each won by decision.

Craig, who is unbeaten in his high school career against Maine opponents, capped his run through the 106-pound division with a technical fall against Cony’s Nic Mills.

CHEERLEADING

STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS: Lewiston won its third consecutive Class A championship and sixth in the last seven seasons with another strong showing at the Augusta Civic Center.

The Blue Devils scored 95 points, followed by Brewer (88.3), Gorham (88.1), Bangor (87.2) and Marshwood (87.1).

Central Aroostook also successfully defended its title in Class D, winning for the ninth time in 10 years and the fourth year in a row. The Panthers scored 70 points, finishing ahead of Penobscot Valley (63.4) and Machias (63.2).

In Class B, Hermon returned to the top after having a five-year reign stopped last year by Old Town. Hermon’s score of 88.1 was enough for a narrow victory over Ellsworth (85.2) and Medomak Valley (84.1). Old Town settled for fourth place (76.3).

Lisbon claimed the Class C championship for the second time in three years with a score of 70.9. Central (68.2), Houlton (67) and Sumner (65.9) rounded out the top four.

BOYS’ HOCKEY

YORK 7, YARMOUTH 0: Tommy Carr and Spencer Pickett each recorded two goals and an assist as the Wildcats (11-2) cruised past the Clippers (6-8-1) in Dover, New Hampshire.

Max Pickett, Jake Martin and Julius Lundgren also scored, and Keenan Gamache made 13 saves for the shutout.

FALMOUTH 7, PORTLAND/DEERING 2: Theo Hembre recorded two goals and four assists as the Yachtsmen (11-3-1) beat the Bulldogs (8-6-1) at Troubh Ice Arena.

Robbie Armitage also scored twice – once while his team was short-handed – and Falmouth used a four-goal second period to break away from a 2-2 tie.

Brendan Hickey, Alex Grade and Jack Kidder contributed a goal apiece for Falmouth.

Mason Martel and Jake Luce scored for Portland.

GREELY 9, GORHAM 0: Jake MacDonald scored three goals, and Andy Moore had two goals and two assists while leading the Rangers (8-5) past the Rams (4-10-1) in Gorham.

Jack Saffian added a goal and two assists, and Ryan Megathlin recorded a goal and an assist. Matt Dubbert and Jackson Williams also scored.

Josh Lawless made 18 saves for Greely, which outshot the Rams, 43-18.
