There is much criticism of police in our country – and, yes, in many instances, with good reason. However, there are times when we need to recognize the work and dedication of our local officers.

I recently had several communications with Detective Richard Beaumont of the Portland Police Department in connection with a person missing for two months. The experience was painful and the loss was extreme for his friends, family and those of us in his community circle.

During that time, I communicated multiple times with the detective in charge (mentioned above). He was professional, helpful, supportive and thorough. He showed compassion, dedication and responsiveness. I was very impressed with his work, as difficult as it is.

As a member of the Civil Service Commission in South Portland, I am acutely aware of the challenges we have to entice young men and women to enter police work with all the challenges in this country right now. I want to take a moment to acknowledge that to stereotype is to continue the damage.

I appreciate the work of the Portland Police Department and, specifically, this detective. It was not a happy outcome, but I valued the work that was done to bring this to closure.
