AUBURN — A jury has acquitted a Maine man of attempted murder but convicted him of other counts in a brutal attack in which he chased his fiancee out of their home with a steak knife.

A jury convicted 45-year-old Eric Griffey of Auburn on Thursday of aggravated assault, domestic violence assault and criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon.
The Sun Journal reports that the victim was beaten and then stabbed several times before neighbors put Griffey in a headlock and disarmed him.
Defense attorney James Howaniec said he was pleased that his client was acquitted of most serious charge. Attempted murder carries a sentence of up to 30 years in prison. Griffey is being held at the Androscoggin County Jail pending sentencing.
