An inexperienced snowmobiler who was going too fast on a curve crashed and died in Carthage on Friday, officials said Friday.

Thomas Henderson, 28, of Dixfield died at the scene, according to the Maine Warden Service. Henderson missed the turn and crashed into several large trees. He was not wearing a helmet.

His passenger, Spencer Knox, 22, jumped off the snowmobile before the turn.

The Maine Warden Service said speed, alcohol and operator inexperience “appear to be factors” in the crash on the groomed trail.

Henderson was the eighth person to die in a snowmobile crash in Maine this year.
