MONTPELIER, Vt. — Officials say Vermont is nearing a deal to move about 250 of its inmates from a privately run prison in Michigan to a public prison in Pennsylvania.

Vermont has been looking for new housing for its Michigan inmates since December, when Geo Group, the company that runs the Michigan prison, sent a letter to Vermont corrections officials saying they were ending their contract in June.

Amy Worden of the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections said Friday the deal will be announced soon, but she declined to share details.

Vermont Corrections Department officials did not immediately return calls Friday seeking comment.
