Sea Dogs rained out for third straight game

The Portland Sea Dogs game with the Trenton Thunder, scheduled for Friday night at Hadlock Field, was postponed because of rain.

It was the third straight rainout and fourth of the season for the Sea Dogs, who also had games postponed in Binghamton on Wednesday and Thursday. Friday’s game will be made up as part of a doubleheader, starting at 1 p.m. Saturday.

HIGH SCHOOLS

BOYS’ LACROSSE: Jon Giroux had six goals and an assist to lead Thornton Academy to an 18-8 win over Cheverus in an opener at Saco.

Wyatt LeBlanc added three goals and an assist, and CJ LaBreck finished with two goals and an assist.

Colby Anton and Finn Cawley each scored two goals and Max Coffin added a goal and two assists for Cheverus.

Evan Patry stopped 14 shots for the win.

Sean Walsh made 13 saves for the Stags.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE: Amanda Cyr scored six goals, Mackenzie Basile added four and Hannah McAlary finished with three assists for Thornton Academy (1-0) in an 18-3 win over Sanford (0-1) at Saco.

Megan O’Connell scored three goals for Sanford.

COLLEGES

SOFTBALL: Faythe Goins hit a three-run homer in the fourth inning to lead Maine to a 4-1 win over Maryland-Baltimore County in Baltimore, Maryland.

UMBC (19-23, 3-6 America East) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a home run by Carly Lesko.

Maine (13-18, 8-1) scored on a fielder’s choice in the fourth before Goins hit her second home run of the season.

Erin Bogdanovich (5-8) recorded the win, allowing six hits while striking out five in a complete game.

MONTE CARLO MASTERS: David Goffin beat Novak Djokovic for the first time in his career on his fifth match point, winning 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 to reach the semifinals.

Goffin denied Djokovic a possible 50th career match against defending champion Rafael Nadal, who rallied from 4-2 down in the second set to beat unseeded Diego Schwartzman 6-4, 6-4.

FRENCH OPEN: Maria Sharapova will find out in mid-May if she can compete at this year’s tournament, which starts May 28, the French Tennis Federation said.

The five-time Grand Slam winner and former world No. 1 returns from a 15-month suspension next week as a wild-card entrant in the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix.

Sharapova was suspended after testing positive for meldonium at the 2016 Australian Open.

SOCCER

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: Defending champion Real Madrid will meet city rival Atletico Madrid in the semifinals in a rematch of last season’s final.

The Spanish teams also met in the 2014 final, with Real Madrid winning both times.

The other half of the draw is Juventus against Monaco.
