Kara Kelly’s goal with 2:34 remaining in regulation gave St. Joseph’s an 11-10 win over Southern Maine in a women’s lacrosse match Monday at Gorham.

St. Joseph’s (9-3) broke a 5-5 tie with four consecutive goals, but USM (7-7) countered with five in a row, including three from Ruth Nadeau.

Elyse Caiazzo tied the game with her fourth goal of the game, from free position, with 3:53 remaining.

Kelly finished with three goals and two assists.

Sam Campobasso, Lauren Lessard and Alexandra Sardinha each scored twice for USM.

BASEBALL: Jake Shapiro started a four-run third inning with a home run and also earned a save for Bates (13-8) in a 6-5 win over Plymouth State (13-14).

FOOTBALL: Northwestern has agreed to a new contract with Coach Pat Fitzgerald that runs through the 2026 season, according to two people with direct knowledge of the deal.

Fitzgerald, 42, has been head coach at his alma mater since 2006. He is 77-62, including seven bowl appearances and two bowl victories.

MEN’S HOCKEY: Michigan hired Mel Pearson as its new coach, replacing Red Berenson, who retired after more than three decades at the helm.

Pearson was an assistant at Michigan from 1988-2011 and has been the head coach the last six seasons at Michigan Tech, going 118-92-29.

TENNIS

WILLIAMS RESPONDS: Serena Wiliams spoke out in response to Ilie Nastase’s comments speculating about the skin color of the baby the pregnant Williams is expecting.

The 23-time major champion wrote on Instagram on Monday: “It disappoints me to know we live in a society where people like Ilie Nastase can make such racist comments towards myself and (my) unborn child.”

Williams is black. Her fiance, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, is white.

Williams also referred to Nastase’s “sexist comments against my peers” – a reference to his verbal abuse directed at British player Johanna Konta, British captain Anne Keothavong and the chair umpire during Fed Cup matches over the weekend. The Romania coach was ejected from the Romania vs. Britain contest and provisionally suspended by the International Tennis Federation.

BARCELONA OPEN: Albert Montanes defeated Spanish countryman Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-4, 6-4 to begin his final tournament.

Montanes, 36, announced last week he will retire after nearly 20 years on tour. He has won six ATP titles.

NHL: The Chicago Blackhawks fired assistant coach Mike Kitchen.

Kitchen joined Coach Joel Quenneville’s staff in July 2010 and helped the Blackhawks win the Stanley Cup in 2013 and 2015.

TRACK AND FIELD

MEDALIST STRIPPED: Russian heptathlete Tatyana Chernova has been stripped of her 2008 Beijing Olympics bronze medal for doping with an anabolic steroid.

Chernova previously lost her 2012 Olympic bronze medal and 2011 world title.
