BRUNSWICK

In solidarity with People’s Climate Marches across the country, Midcoast residents gathered on the Mall for a Brunswick Climate March on Saturday.

Organized by the Unitarian Universalist Church of Brunswick, the Brunswick Climate March drew more than 100 people. Thousands of others attended the main march in Washington, D.C. and a similar march in Augusta.

“The message I hope people will take is that: one — climate change is real. No matter how many people try to deny it, it’s real — it’s happening.” said Sylvia Stocker, UUC minister. “And two — that people are watching. We’re watching to see what happens and we will act when the politics of the day work counter to our mother earth.”

Signs, chants

The crowd held up signs calling for climate justice and engaged in chants such as “this is what democracy looks like.”

“I am concerned, really concerned, about the deregulation of industry, and how it’s going to push us back years and years and years. We have only one planet, and we need to save it,” said Brunswick resident Wendy Faschner.

“It’s probably stating the obvious, and it’s been stated again and again — we’re running out of time where the earth is concerned,” said Stocker. “We can’t afford to mess with this.

“I hope that people will really wake up,” she added. “And look at the science of it, look at the facts of it and not the emotional import of politicians who want us to believe otherwise.”
