Olt homer, tough pitching carry Sea Dogs to victory

Mike Olt’s solo home run in the fourth inning proved decisive Thursday for the visiting Portland Sea Dogs (17-12) during their 5-0 victory against the Reading Fightin Phils (17-13).

The Sea Dogs added two runs in the fifth when Danny Mars scored on Nick Longhi’s groundout and Cole Sturgeon singled home Josh Tobias. They added two more on Longhi’s seventh-inning single that drove in Tobias and Rafael Devers.

Jalen Beeks (5-1) recorded the win, striking out seven and allowing two hits over five innings. He now has a 24-inning scoreless streak, tied for second best in team history.

GIRO D’ITALIA: Silvan Dillier used an early breakaway to take the sixth stage at Terme Luigiane, Italy, and his first Grand Tour victory, while Bob Jungels retained the overall lead.

Dillier began his sprint with 150 meters to go on the climb to the finish and the BMC Racing rider had the power to hold off Jasper Stuyven, who banged his bars in anger and frustration as he crossed the line half a wheel behind the Swiss cyclist.

HOCKEY

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS: Canada rallied to beat France 3-2 at Paris, breaking a tie early in the third period when the puck deflected past goalie Florian Hardy off French teammate Jonathan Janil.

Bidding for a third straight world title and a record-equaling 27th overall, Canada leads Group B with 12 points. The Canadians are three points ahead of Switzerland and five clear of third-place Czech Republic and fourth-place Norway – separated on goal difference. Finland is fifth and France sixth.

 Veteran goaltender Henrik Lundqvist is joining Sweden at the tournament following the New York Rangers’ recent elimination from the Stanley Cup playoffs.

NFL: A person with knowledge of the decision said Cleveland Browns receiver Josh Gordon was denied reinstatement by the NFL.

Gordon, who can reapply for reinstatement in the fall, has been suspended several times by the league, including the current ban for violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy. He also was suspended for 10 games in 2014, then for the 2015 season, all for substance- abuse violations.

 A person with knowledge of the situation said that quarterback Blaine Gabbert has agreed to a one-year contract with the Arizona Cardinals.

EUROPA LEAGUE: Manchester United stumbled into the final after conceding a late goal in a tension-filled 1-1 draw against visiting Celta Vigo of Spain that ended with both teams having a man sent off.

Manchester United advanced 2-1 on aggregate, with Marcus Rashford’s winner in the first leg last week ultimately proving the difference.

 Visiting Ajax of Amsterdam withstood a brilliant comeback from Lyon to reach the final 4-3 on aggregate despite taking a 3-1 defeat in France.

TENNIS

MADRID OPEN: Andy Murray’s struggles on clay continued with a 6-3, 6-3 loss to Borna Coric of Croatia in the third round, and defending champion Novak Djokovic and four-time champion Rafael Nadal made it to the quarterfinals.

Djokovic defeated Spanish veteran Feliciano Lopez 6-4, 7-5, and Nadal eased past Nick Kyrgios of Australia, 6-3, 6-1.
