BIDDEFORD — Douglas Paul Hooper, 58, of Herring Street passed away unexpectedly Monday May 15, 2017, at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford.  

Doug was born in Potomac, Maryland, June 13, 1958, the son of Donald and Alma Thomas Hooper.

The family moved to Huntsville, Alabama, in the summer of 1959, then back to Annapolis Maryland in 1962. In 1965, the family moved to Alma’s home town of Ashland, Kentucky. 

In 1968, Don went to New York when his mother died and the family followed a few months later, settling in the Bronx. In 1971, the family moved to Township 24 in rural Maine, halfway between Bangor and Calais.  

He was a graduate of Narraguagus High School in Harrington, Maine, and then the University of Maine in Augusta.

For over 30 years, he was a real estate broker with numerous real estate designations in specialized fields. He presently worked in real estate management and was currently the sales manager for Berkshire Hathaway Home Services Northeast Real Estate and as an instructor with Arthur Gary School of Real Estate.

Doug is survived by: his daughter, Heather Thomas Uva of Tulsa, Oklahoma; two brothers, Dan and his wife, Christine, of Smyrna, Maine, and Stephen and his wife, Gina, of Limerick. Also surviving are: sister-in-law Claudia Rherig of Plainsboro, New Jersey; and her two girls, Amanda and Rachel; Dan and Christine’s daughter, Jennifer; and Stephen’s son, Tim.

His hobbies included music and travel. Doug was a founding member of Toys for Tots, past president of Saco Bay Rotary, past assistant governor of Rotary District 7780, United Way volunteer, director for Biddeford Community Bike Center, corporator for Biddeford Saving Bank, president-elect of the Saco Bay Sunset Rotary Club and Paul Harris Fellow recipient.

Doug fixed anything broken and volunteered for anything that needed to be done.

Friends and relatives may call at the Dennett, Craig & Pate Funeral Home 365 Main St., Saco, Maine, Friday, May 19, 2017, from 5 to 8 p.m. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the First Parish Congregational Church of Saco UCC, 12 Beach St., Saco.
