An 18-month-old boy died after being hit by a pickup truck Friday afternoon near an elementary school in the Penobscot County town of Alton, Maine State Police said.
The accident happened around 4:30 p.m. in the parking lot of Alton Elementary School, state police spokesman Steve McCausland said in a statement Friday night.
The school is located near Route 16, north of Old Town.
The boy was with family members watching one of them use a go-kart in the parking lot. A man who had his trucked parked in the lot began to drive off and didn’t see the boy. One of the truck’s tires ran over the boy.
Emergency workers arrived at the scene to treat the boy, but he died 20 minutes later, according to McCausland.
He said the names of those involved will be released Saturday morning.
