SACO — Youngsters are invited to learn about bicycle safety at the second annual Saco Community Bike Rodeo from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Saco Public Works Facility on North Street.

The free event is sponsored by the Parent Teacher Organizations of Young School and Fairfield School in Saco in partnership with Saco Parks and Recreation, Saco Public Works, Saco Police Department, Saco Fire Department, Rotary Club of Saco Bay and Saco Masonic Lodge #9.

“We’re very excited about it,” said Young School PTO President Jennifer Sorois. She said more than 500 people attended last year, and organizers are hoping for good attendance this year as well.
The rodeo will consist of a safety course with different stations where children will learn basic road safety skills, such as what a stop sign means.

Students should bring their bicycles or scooters and helmets to participate in the rodeo, and current and retired police officers will be on hand to inflate tires and other quick tune ups to make sure the bicycles are safe, said Sirois.

Activities will also include helmet fittings, face painting, a “touch the truck” activity and information booths from local health and wellness organizations.

There will also be raffle tickets for sale and food for purchase with proceeds benefiting Saco elementary schools to fund field trips, school supplies, and curriculum-enhancing activities.

Participants are also asked to bring non-perishable food items for the Saco Food Pantry.
