Barfield homer lifts Sea Dogs to a split

Jeremy Barfield hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning Saturday night to lead the visiting Portland Sea Dogs to a 2-0 victory against the Binghamton Rumble Ponies in the second game of a doubleheader.

Jacob Dahlstrand (4-1) earned the win for Portland (24-28), allowing four hits with two strikeouts in five innings.

In the first game, Binghamton (31-20) scored four runs in the first inning and won 5-1.

SOFTBALL: Abbie Murrell threw a no-hitter with 10 strikeouts and drove in three runs as Scarborough beat Portland 19-0 in five innings in the SMAA championship game at South Portland.

Hunter Greenleaf went 4 for 4 with three RBI for Scarborough, which totaled 23 hits. The Red Storm made the final by beating Thornton Academy 8-2 in the semifinals earlier in the day. Portland outlasted Windham 5-4 in the other semifinal.

BASEBALL: Ben Nelson and Jason Komulainen scored on a throwing error in the fifth inning and Gorham shut out South Portland 3-0 in the SMAA championship game at South Portland.

Gorham beat Portland 8-0 and South Portland beat Cheverus 5-3 in the semifinals.

GOLF

MEMORIAL TOURNAMENT: Daniel Summerhays shot a 4-under 68 that took him from a five-shot deficit to a three-shot lead at Dublin, Ohio.

Summerhays was helps by a meltdown by Jason Dufner, who lost his lead with four straight bogeys on the front nine and hit two balls in the water on the back nine for a 77. Dufner went from the 36-hole record to four shots out of the lead.

LPGA: Paula Creamer and In-Kyung Kim topped the second-round ShopRite LPGA Classic leaderboard at Galloway Township, New Jersey, each at 133.

EUROPEAN TOUR: English golfer Chris Wood moved into a one-stroke lead despite a bogey on his last hole in the third round of the Nordea Masters at Malmo, Sweden.

SOCCER

MLS: Juan Agudelo had a goal and an assist, Benjamin Angoua added his first career goal and the New England Revolution beat Toronto FC 3-0 at Foxborough, Massachusetts.

Angoua headed home a corner kick by Lee Nguyen in the 17th minute, Diego Fagundez added a goal in the 66th, and Agudelo gave New England (5-5-5) a 3-0 lead in the 85th.

AUTO RACING

XFINITY SERIES: Kyle Larson easily won the race at Dover, Delaware, for his second straight victory in NASCAR’s second-tier series.

Larson has won three times in six races this season. He is a regular in the Cup series.

INDYCAR: Graham Rahal won the first of two Detroit Grand Prix races, easily holding off Scott Dixon. The second race will be held Sunday.

COLLEGE

BASEBALL: Kevin Smith hit two of Maryland’s four home runs and drove in six runs, and the Terrapins beat Maryland-Baltimore County 16-2 in an NCAA tournament elimination game at Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Marty Costes and Justin Morris also homered for third-seeded Maryland (38-22), which held the fourth-seeded Retrievers (23-25) – who defeated Maine in the America East final – to two solo homers a day after allowing West Virginia to hit six home runs in an opening-game loss.
