Westbrook police say a man was killed Sunday morning after his Chevrolet Camaro collided with a sport utility vehicle on Route 302 in Westbrook.

Police in a statement said that the driver, whose name had still not been released as of late Sunday, was traveling east on Route 302 when his car struck the rear end of a Nissan SUV. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the SUV, a woman, was treated at the scene and refused to be transported to a hospital. Police have not identified her.

Both vehicles were destroyed as a result of the crash, which forced authorities to close Route 302, between Hardy Road and the Windham town line for more than four hours. The road reopened around 10:45 a.m. The crash took place at 6:10 a.m.

The name of the man is being withheld by police pending notification of next of kin. WMTW-TV reported that the victim was 72-years-old.
