ALTOONA, PA — The Altoona Curve (34-28) scored four runs in the eighth inning, and took the series opener from the Portland Sea Dogs (28-31), 6-0, Tuesday night at Peoples Natural Gas Field. The loss snapped Portland’s four-game winning streak.

Altoona’s J.T. Brubaker (W, 4-2) tossed a season-high seven innings on just three hits, no walks and fanned a season-high 10 batters. 

Portland’s Travis Lakins suffered a tough loss, allowing just two runs on six hits over six innings pitched. Lakins dropped to 0-4, earning his first quality start in Double-A.

The Curve struck in the fifth inning on a run-scoring single by Jerrick Suiter. The next inning, Altoona made it 2-0 on back-to-back two-out hits. Connor Joe tripled and scored on a single by Edwin Espinal.

In the eighth, Elvis Escobar greeted Jake Cosart by smoking the first pitch of the inning over the right-field wall. Altoona added three runs off Cosart in the inning.

Portland had just three hits, all singles (Barfield, Lin and Olt), and just one runner reached third base.

The Sea Dogs and Altoona Curve continue their three-game series on Wednesday night. RHP Eli Villanueva makes his second start of the season for Portland. Altoona counters with RHY Yeudy Garcia (2-4, 5.80). First pitch from Peoples Natural Gas begins at 7:00 PM.
