HARPSWELL
Cumberland County Sheriff ’s Office arrested a Harpswell man early Tuesday morning they say assaulted two other men with a bat or long pipe.
Rion Smith, 24, was charged with aggravated assault, criminal mischief and refusing to submit to arrest or detention.
According to Patrol Capt. Scott Stewart, Smith had been with two other men Monday evening at 72 Stover’s Point Road when a physical altercation ensued, after which Smith left on foot.
Police said Smith returned a short time later, at around 1 a.m. Tuesday, and allegedly smashed a sliding glass door and assaulted the two men with what was described as a bat or long pipe.
One of the victims received several strikes to the head and was transported to a hospital.
Smith had left prior to deputies arriving, but was found nearby and fled when deputies approached him. He later surrendered to deputies at a nearby residence.
Deputies as of Tuesday were searching for the weapon.
