WATERBORO — Voters on Tuesday agreed it was time to dispense with the annual Town Meeting and move to a referendum vote for deciding annual budgets in a 365 to 256 vote.

Voters re-elected Dwayne Woodsome and elected Ted Doyle to 2, three-year terms on the selectmen’s board. Woodsome earned 451 votes, Doyle earned 243 and Steve Letellier earned 230.

The quest to renovate Waterboro Fire Station was narrowly defeated, with 339 people voting against the measure and 330 voting in favor of the $750,000 proposal, according to Town Administrator Gary Lamb, who expressed disappointment in the result. It was the second time an expansion proposal at the fire station was defeated. Voters rejected a larger, $2 million expansion in November.

Voters agreed to prohibit marijuana social clubs, retail cultivation facilities, production, retail stores and testing facilities, Lamb said in a brief statement.

In all, 678 of Waterboro’s 5,317 voters cast ballots.
