BRUNSWICK (AP) — The head of law enforcement for the Maine Marine Patrol says there will be no charges stemming from thousands of dead fish that created a stench for coastal homeowners in Brunswick.

Brunswick officials say the dead pogies were not the result of a natural phenomenon. They were simply part of a large catch that was too big for a fishing vessel to handle.

Dan Devereaux, Brunswick’s marine resources officer, spent much of the weekend removing the fish that had washed up in dozens of inlets and coves.

Maine Marine Patrol Maj. Rene Cloutier said that officials know who the fisherman was, but the law doesn’t support a charge. He said the fisherman was advised to take precautions to ensure that it didn’t happen again.
