Pet show

Would you like to show off your beloved animal and meet other interesting pets? Come to the New Gloucester Public Library, 379 Intervale Road at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 11, for the 15th annual Pet Show.

All pets are welcome to attend for socializing and species-appropriate snacks. Light refreshments will be served for the human types. A representative from the GNG Animal Hospital will be on hand for a fun presentation. Two K9 handlers from Maine Search and Rescue Dogs also will give a presentation and demonstration.

Summer meals for kids

The Gray-New Gloucester Summer Food Service Program provides a fun, safe place for all children, up to age 18, to eat a healthy meal. The site in New Gloucester is the Memorial School playground at 86 Intervale Road, Route 231. Meals will be served on weekdays from 11-11:30 a.m. starting Monday, July 17, through Friday, Aug. 18.

Ladies Auxiliary flea market

The Amvets Post 6 Ladies Auxiliary will host a flea market on Saturday, July 29, from 9 a.m.-2 p.m., at the post home at 1095 Lewiston Road, Route 100. Vendors will be there with their wares, along with a white elephant table.

The Auxiliary also will have a baked goods table to benefit their scholarship program. There will be a lunch counter with hot dogs, chips and soda for sale.

Tables are available to vendors for $15 each. To reserve a table, call Kathy at 346-0868. Proceeds will benefit the auxiliary’s yearly projects.

For more than 150 years, the Shakers produced a wide variety of distinctive utility baskets for home use and exquisitely fine fancy baskets for sale to the world. Instructor Pat Libby, is a skilled basket maker who is well-versed in Shaker history, will lead a workshop for beginners and beyond from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 22, at Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village, 707 Shaker Road.

Each participant will weave their own basket using natural reed. All materials, tools, and supplies are included in $70 fee and pre-registration is required. Register online at www.maineshakers.com, or by phone at 926-4597.

Malaga Island monument dedication

A new monument memorializing the inhabitants of Malaga Island is scheduled to be dedicated at 1 p.m. on Friday, July 14, at the Pineland Cemetery on Intervale Road, Route 231. Gov. Paul LePage is expected to speak. The ceremony is open to the public.

Ballot clerks needed

Ballot clerks are needed to assist clerks at the polls on Election Day. No experience is necessary as training is provided. A ballot clerk must be a U.S. citizen of at least 18 years of age and a registered voter residing in the municipality. They ought to be flexible for scheduling on Election Day.
