I was appalled by the letter to the editor by Robert Lyons (“Republicans’ outrage should be directed at top offender,” July 15) and shocked by your decision to print it.

Mr. Lyons writes of “the rising chorus of citizens who ask: ‘Who will rid us of this troublesome and immoral president?’ ”

He is repeating the cry of Henry II, referring to the troublesome archbishop of Canterbury, Thomas Becket. Henry’s cry was answered by four of his knights, who rode to Canterbury Cathedral and assassinated Becket at the steps of the altar.

Mr. Lyons is, quite simply, calling for the assassination of President Trump. Your printing of his letter would appear to endorse his call; it certainly publicized it.

Shame on Mr. Lyons, and shame on the Portland Press Herald.
