Maine State Prison inmate Charles L. Pettigrow, 47, died around 3:45 p.m. Saturday, according to the Maine Department of Corrections.

State police and the Office of Chief Medical Examiner both were notified following Pettigrow’s death inside the Warren prison, the department said in a statement, adding that both organizations will review the death.

Pettigrow was serving time for two counts of theft by unauthorized taking or transfer, and for eluding an officer. At the time of his death, he had served 14 months of his sentence.

In March 2016, Pettigrow was arrested after an attempted traffic stop of his vehicle for an expired inspection sticker turned into a half-hour police chase between Gorham and Buxton.

The department provided no information about the manner of Pettigrow’s death except to say that it was “anticipated.” WCSH-TV reported that it received a call from Pettigrow’s sister, who said that he had been suffering from a rare blood cancer since August 2014.
