HOLLIS — A  Dayton man was critically injured  this morning following a crash with a tractor trailer truck just before 9 a.m. at the intersection of Cape Road (Route 117) and Bar Mills Road (Route 4A).

Seth Tarbox, 34,  sustained visible injuries to his head and face, said Maine Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland. He was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland by Waterboro Rescue. The driver of the tractor trailer rig, Edwin Galarza, 59, of Union City, New Jersey, was not injured.

Maine State Police Troop A and troopers from the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit responded to the crash at 8:53 a.m.

Police said the preliminary investigation indicated that Tarbox’s vehicle was in the middle of the intersection when it came into contact with the driver’s side of the tractor trailer just in front of the trailer’s tires.

McCausland said Galarza had the right of way and is appears as if Tarbox failed to stop at a posted sign.

The tractor trailer unit, a 2007 Volvo owned and operated by Galarza, was empty and headed northbound on Route 117 to the Poland Springs plant. The car, a 2009 Scion XB owned and operated by Tarbox, was going eastbound on 4A.

The Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit was able to determine that the tractor trailer driver was going 33 mph in a posted 35 mph zone. Upon further investigation, troopers determined that he had falsified his log book and was issued a summons for the Class E misdemeanor. Galarza was ordered not to drive for 10 hours due to the violation.

McCausland said Biddeford Police Department Traffic Specialist Robert Flint assisted at the scene with reconstruction.
