BUXTON — Police in Buxton have put out the word that they’d like to interview anyone who may have witnessed a local man whom they claim was naked and displayed allegedly indecent behavior near the Route 202 bridge over the Saco River earlier this month.

Buxton Police arrested John Cote, 34, of Buxton on a warrant July 26 charging indecent conduct and violating conditions of release. He is the same man who was arrested and charged with indecent conduct July 23 in Hollis after allegedly exposing himself to a 7-year-old there and later to a group of people who had confronted him.

A condition of his release on bail from York County Jail in the Hollis case was that he stay out of the town of Hollis, a judge ordered in that earlier case.

According to Buxton Police, witnesses to the event in Hollis also witnessed similar behavior at the Salmon Falls location.

“During this incident Cote is alleged to have exposed himself to multiple people at the “ledge” near the Route 202 bridge,” Buxton Police said in a social media posting. “He is also alleged to have been completely naked at one point during this incident, and there were multiple children and juveniles present.”

Police said that the swimmers had taken refuge on one side of the ledge while Cote, allegedly nude, stood on the opposite side of the ledge.

Police said police obtained a warrant for Cote’s arrest after the prior incident in Hollis.

Cote was released on $500 cash bail, according to police. Conditions of his bail include that he maintain a 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew.

Buxton Police say they would like to interview anyone who was present at the ledge on July 16 around 4 p.m.

They ask that anyone with information pertinent to this case please contact the Buxton Police Department at 929-6612 and ask to speak to Officer Warren Day.
