SANFORD — Ruth Cecile (Hackett) Bernard, 94, of Sanford, died Monday morning, July 31, 2017, at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Ruth was born on May 16, 1923, in Haverhill, Massachusetts, a daughter of Edith (Farrington) and John Hackett.

She was a wonderful, loving, caring, mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend. She had an amazing sense of humor, which anyone who spent time with her enjoyed, especially her children and grandchildren.

During World War II, she worked in a defense plant. She loved the Lord and served Him by leading youth group at church in her earlier years.

In addition to her parents, Ruth was preceded in death by: her husband, Melbourne Bernard, a daughter, Rosemary, 10 sisters, two brothers, and three grandsons.

She is survived by: her daughters Marguerite (Peggy) Bennett and Dorothy Whitmore, of Wells, Lena Bernard, of Sanford, and Marjorie Vaillancourt and husband Danny, of Springvale; sons, Melbourne Bernard and John Bernard and his wife Kathy, of Lisbon, Archer Bernard and his wife Melodie, of Sanford, many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, Aug. 4 at 10 a.m. with an hour of visitation prior at Mount Zion Chapel, 119 Crediford Road., Wells, ME. Burial will be held on Monday, Aug. 7, at noon at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Augusta.

Arrangements are under the direction of Black Funeral Homes and Cremation Service, Sanford-Springvale.
