Seeing cyclists riding two abreast, in brightly colored team shirts and looking very intense, is common in our Back Cove neighborhood. What I saw last week was more like a “pod” of cyclists in brightly colored team shirts looking free and easy and very cheerful.
I thought, “This must be a club instead of a team.” As I passed them I could see two passengers riding in adapted bicycles. Making sense of what I saw, especially the joy of all the riders on a lovely day, gave me goose bumps and tears.
The minute I got home I looked up what was printed on the shirts, “Portland Wheelers.” According to their Facebook page, the program is for “severely disabled and debilitated elders, children, war veterans and more.”
I think this is an organization immensely worthy of our support. For more information, visit their Facebook page or portlandwheelers.org.
