PORTLAND –– Police were called to Long Wharf at 8:38 a.m. Thursday after a tour guide reported finding a body floating in the water near the wharf.

The 42-year-old man has been tentatively identified but police were still working on notifying his family. They did not release his identity.

Portland police Lt. Robert Martin said there is no indication of foul play after a preliminary examination.

“Nothing sticks out but it’s up to the Medical Examiner’s Office to determine cause of death,” he said. Martin said the man was fully clothed and was wearing shoes.

The police activity on the wharf drew onlookers, said Kathy Libby, who works for Odyssey Tours, a boat tour operator. She said the 9 a.m. tour was canceled because of the activity.

The owner of Odyssey Tours, who gave his name only as Chris, said he called police when he noticed the body floating near the dock.

“We saw a foot sticking out from under the dock,” he said. “We called police and they took it from there. They told us to keep the boat where it was.”
