The driver of a Ford 250 pickup truck was hospitalized with a broken arm after his vehicle crossed a congested intersection in Scarborough during Thursday’s evening commute and smashed into a row of gas pumps.

Scarborough police Sgt. Steve Thibodeau said a witness told police that the man, whose name has not been released yet, was stopped at a red light at the intersection of routes 1 and 114 around 6 p.m. when he apparently passed out and accelerated across the intersection.

Police credit a gas station employee with quickly turning off the gas flow to the pumps, preventing a situation that could have been much worse.

Thibodeau said the truck rammed the gas pumps at the Oak Hill Citgo station. The crash knocked over a gas pump island and support pillar, but did not cause a fire or explosion.

Thibodeau credited a gas station employee with turning off the gas flow to the pumps. If she had not reacted so quickly, Thibodeau said, the accident could have been much worse.

A boy about 4 or 5 years old was in the truck with the man and was taken to Maine Medical Center to be checked out. The boy’s injuries were not considered serious.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
