Congratulations to Unity College for receiving the grand prize for sustainability recently at the National Association of College and University Food Services conference. In so doing, the college won out over finalists Duke University and the University of Texas at Austin, among others. Quite an accomplishment for a college with fewer than 700 students located in a small town east of Waterville.

I had the pleasure of visiting Unity College last fall and seeing, firsthand, how their mission of sustainability applies across campus, not just to food services. For example, Unity offers 18 majors in sustainability science that prepare students for leadership in a wide range of career choices. Given that climate change is our most pressing global problem, career choices at Unity are both practical and timely.

Unity College provides a model that could be replicated worldwide as we address the immediate dangers of climate change. Maine is fortunate to have this excellent college in its midst.
