Police say speed and alcohol were factors in an accident Tuesday that injured seven people, all under the legal drinking age in Maine, in Porter.

Steve McCausland, spokesman for the Maine State Police, said four men and three women – all 18 or 19 years old – were in the 2013 Nissan Altima when it went off Spec Pond Road and slammed into a tree around 11:45 p.m.

McCausland said two ambulances and a Lifeflight helicopter transported victims to Maine Medical Center in Portland. Porter is in Oxford County.

Two women were the most seriously injured and remained hospitalized Wednesday night, McCausland said.

“Troopers said speed and alcohol were factors in the wreck,” McCausland said in a statement. “In addition to determining the cause of the crash, troopers are looking into where the alcohol was obtained.”

McCausland said state police are not prepared to identify the occupants of the car while the investigation continued.

The legal age to purchase and consume alcohol in Maine is 21.
