KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Chiefs are signing C.J. Spiller one day after releasing the veteran running back, resolving a curious move on cut day that left Kansas City with only two running backs on the roster.

A person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press on Sunday night that Spiller was returning to the Chiefs. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the move was not announced.

The Kansas City Star was the first to report that Spiller was returning to Kansas City.

Spiller was released so that the Chiefs could keep injured cornerback Steven Nelson on the roster. The Chiefs wanted to put Nelson on injured reserve with a designation to return, but they could only do that if the third-year pro made the initial 53-man roster.

SAINTS: New Orleans claimed wide receiver Austin Carr off waivers from the New England Patriots, according to The Times-Picayune in New Orleans.

Carr, an undrafted rookie free agent, was the Patriots’ leading receiver during preseason with 14 catches for 153 yards and two touchdowns.

New Orleans also claimed rookie quarterback Taysom Hill from the Packers.

BILLS: Add running back Jonathan Williams to the list of former Buffalo draft picks no longer on the team.

The 2016 fifth-round selection was a surprise cut when Buffalo had to make room for three players acquired on waivers. Williams had 121 yards rushing and a touchdown this preseason, and was projected to be LeSean McCoy’s primary backup.

The backup role now falls to Mike Tolbert and Joe Banyard, with Buffalo preparing to open the season hosting the New York Jets next weekend.

The Bills also released receiver Philly Brown and linebacker Gerald Hodges. Brown became the odd-man out a day after Buffalo dealt cornerback Kevon Seymour and acquired receiver/returner Kaelin Clay in a trade with Carolina.

The moves coincided with Buffalo claiming tight end Khari Lee from the Lions, linebacker Deon Lacey from the Dolphins and rookie tackle Conor McDermott from the Patriots.

JETS: New York claimed four players off waivers, including former Giants tight end Will Tye.

Wide receivers Damore’ea Stringfellow and Kalif Raymond, and linebacker Edmond Robinson also were claimed.

JAGUARS: Jacksonville added five players off waivers, including tight end James O’Shaughnessy from the Patriots, and cut third-string quarterback Brandon Allen.

In addition to O’Shaughnessy, Jacksonville claimed defensive tackle Eli Ankou (Houston), linebacker Donald Payne (Baltimore), defensive back Lafayette Pitts (Miami) and offensive tackle William Poehls (Chicago).

COLTS: Indianapolis claimed five players off waivers, including running back Matt Jones from Washington and defensive back Kenny Moore from the Patriots.

TRADE: Tampa Bay traded safety J.J. Wilcox to the Pittsburgh Steelers in exchange for a sixth-round draft pick in 2018 and a seventh-rounder in 2019.
