LEWISTON — Grace Fitzgerald ripped a shot into the lower-right part of the cage in the fifth minute of overtime to send Bates College to a 2-1 victory over No. 2 Babson in a nonconference field hockey match on Tuesday night.

Taylor Lough scored off a feed from Sydney Beres for the Bobcats (5-5) at 53:53, but Kate Driscoll answered just 1:21 later for the Beavers (12-2), who were ranked second in this week’s National Field Hockey Coaches Association’s Division III poll.

Bates’ Adelae Durand and Babson’s Deirdre Barry each recorded two saves.

The Bobcats earned a win over Babson for the fifth straight season, including victories over Beavers teams ranked in the top 10 in each of the past two seasons.

KEENE STATE 5, USM 0: Jensyn Dandeneau scored three times in the second half as the Owls (9-5, 8-1 Little East) beat Southern Maine (4-10, 3-5) at Gorham.

Nina Bruno had a goal and an assist. Kendal Brown also scored.

GORDON 1, UNE 0: Josh Beveridge put the ball into the net with 3:32 left in regulation to give Gordon (8-4-1, 3-1-1 Commonwealth Coast) a victory over the University of New England (2-12, 1-4) in Biddeford.

Danny O’Brien’s bid to tie the game went wide left as time expired.

Fighting Scots goalie Wesley Sprague made five saves, while Nathan Delesdernier had seven for the Nor’easters.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

SMCC 6, CMCC 0: Samantha Munson and Madelyn Wade each scored twice in the second half to lead Southern Maine CC (5-3-1, 3-1-1 Yankee Small College) over Central Maine CC (5-4, 3-4) at South Portland.

Jordan Chase and Callie O’Brien scored in the first half.

Shae Couture stopped four shots for the Seawolves. Ali Sult had 21 saves for the Mustangs.

GORDON 2, UNE 0: The Fighting Scots (5-4-2, 2-2-1 CCC) scored twice in a span of 2:32 in the second half to beat the Nor’easters (5-7-1, 1-4-0) at Biddeford.

Kiersten Klose put in her shot from 30 yards at 61:32 and then Jill Kefalas banged in a shot off a scramble in front of the net.

Kali Denty had five saves for the Scots.

Emily Ashman turned back 14 shots for UNE.

FOOTBALL

NORTH CAROLINA STATE: The scool is pursuing an extension for coach Dave Doeren.

In a statement Tuesday, athletic director Debbie Yow said school officials “want Dave here a long time and appreciate the progress that has been made.” Doeren’s contract with the No. 20 Wolfpack runs through the 2019 season.

N.C. State (5-1) is in the AP Top 25 for the first time since 2010.
