For the fourth year in a row, Hancock Lumber has been named one of the 2017 Best Places to Work in Maine.

The statewide survey and awards program was designed to identify, recognize and honor the best places of employment in Maine, benefiting the state’s economy, its workforce and businesses. The 2017 Best Places to Work in Maine list is made up of 80 companies in three size categories: small (15-49 employees), medium (50-249 employees) and large (250-plus employees). With 490 employees, Hancock Lumber’s honor falls into the large business category.

Kevin Hancock, company president, issued a message to employees upon hearing the news. “I am excited that we are a ‘Best Places to Work in Maine’ for the fourth year in a row. Everyone contributes to the work culture, so every person is responsible for this award. Congratulations! Work should be a place where people learn, grow and feel important. We spend too much time at work to not make work a valuable experience. I love how we are redefining what a lumber company can be about. Thank you!”

Companies from across the state entered the two-part process to determine the Best Places to Work in Maine. The first part consisted of evaluating each nominated company’s workplace policies, practices and demographics. This part of the process was worth 25 percent of the total evaluation. The second part, worth 75 percent of the evaluation, consisted of direct employee feedback to measure their workplace experience. The combined scores determined the top companies and the final rankings.

Wendy Scribner, human resources director and a 30-plus-year Hancock veteran, said, “Receiving the best places to work award and knowing that the survey responses are from our entire team makes it one of the more meaningful accolades we could possibly receive. It helps to tell our story in support of our culture, beliefs, shared responsibility and respectful treatment of one another.”

Established in 1848, Hancock Lumber Company is a sixth generation, family-owned business operating a timberland company, a sawmill division and a network of retail lumberyards and home design showrooms across Maine and New Hampshire, including a store in Brunswick.

Hancock Lumber became OSHA SHARP safety certified at two of its sawmills, and the company is also a past recipient of the Maine Family Business of the Year award, the Governor’s Award for Business Excellence, and the MITC “Exporter of the Year” award.
