Portland police said a sport utility vehicle crashed into an outer wall of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception building that houses the St. Vincent de Paul Soup Kitchen on Monday evening but caused very little damage to the historic building.
An SUV struck the corner of the St. Vincent de Paul Soup Kitchen housed in this building at Congress and Franklin streets.
The police report said a Toyota Highlander was traveling west on Congress Street and was about to make a right turn onto Franklin Street when an unknown vehicle traveling east on Congress turned left onto Franklin at the same time.
The driver of the Toyota swerved to avoid a collision and ran off the road, over the sidewalk and struck the building that houses the St Vincent de Paul Soup Kitchen.
Lt. Heath Gorham said the driver, who was not charged, did not suffer any injuries. His vehicle had to be towed from the crash scene.
The Cathedral, which was built between 1866 and 1869, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.
