There are lots of reasons why the call to the family of Sgt. La David Johnson, one of the soldiers killed in Niger, was turned into a political disaster for President Trump. Among the reasons are Trump’s narcissism and immaturity – and apparently Gen. John Kelly is not the grown-up we all hoped he would be as White House chief of staff.
When you unintentionally say something that causes offense or hurt, it makes absolutely no difference to the person in that moment whether or not you meant it.
Rather than bully and attack the messenger and try to defend the message, the correct response should have been “I am so sorry that what I said hurt you. Please know that was not at all my intention. I will try to do better.” End of story.
