Armour leads by five after third round at Sanderson

Ryan Armour shot a 5-under 67 during a windy, chilly third round Saturday to take a five-stroke lead at the Sanderson Farms Championship.

Armour, who led by one after 36 holes, had eight birdies and three bogeys to move to 15-under 201. Chesson Hadley (68) was next at 10 under. Vaughn Taylor (70), Scott Strohmeyer (68), Beau Hossler (69), Ben Silverman (69), and Seamus Power (71) were tied for third another shot back at 207.

HSBC CHAMPIONS: Dustin Johnson shot 68 and has a six-shot lead going into the final round in Shanghai.

Brooks Koepka is second after a third-round 73 and Henrik Stenson is one shot behind Koepka.

LPGA: Cristie Kerr fired a 6-under 65 to take a one-stroke lead over defending champion Feng Shanshan at the Sime Darby in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The American veteran, who posted the tournament’s lowest score of 63 on Friday, had five birdies in the opening nine holes of the third round and got two more for an overall 15-under 198.

SKIING

WOMEN’S WORLD CUP: Lindsey Vonn’s first giant slalom appearance in nearly two years ended in disappointment in Soelden, Austria. She finished 3.31 seconds behind first-run leader Manuela Moelgg of Italy, 34th overall and missing the second run.

The race was ultimately won by Germany’s Viktoria Rebensburg. Ranked third after the opening run, Rebensburg used a strong finish to her final run to edge Worley by 0.14 seconds. First-run leader Manuela Moelgg of Italy finished third, 0.53 behind.

Overall champion Mikaela Shiffrin, who was second after the opening leg, had a tough run and the American nearly skied out before finishing in fifth, 0.74 off Rebensburg’s winning time.

AUTO RACING

NASCAR TRUCK SERIES: Noah Gragson won his first career Truck Series race by passing two-time champ Matt Crafton on the final restart at Martinsville Speedway.

Gragson, who is from Las Vegas, won for Kyle Busch Motorsports

FORMULA ONE: Lewis Hamilton will be chasing his fourth season title from behind Sebastian Vettel at Sunday’s Mexican Grand Prix.

Blistering late laps by Vettel and Max Verstappen will have Ferrari and Red Bull starting 1-2 with Hamilton third.

SPANISH LEAGUE: Lionel Messi scored again and Barcelona won again, though in lackluster fashion and by 2-0 at Athletic Bilbao. Messi netted his 12th league goal in the first half.

TENNIS

ERSTE BANK OPEN: Jo-Wilfried Tsonga defeated Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany 7-6 (4), 7-5 in Vienna to set up a final against fellow Frenchman Lucas Pouille.

SWISS INDOORS: Roger Federer cruised past David Goffin 6-1, 6-2 in the semifinals in Basel to reach an 11th straight final when playing at his hometown event.

The top-seeded Swiss will face Juan Martin del Potro on Sunday, after the fourth-seeded Argentine beat Marin Cilic 6-4, 6-4.

WTA FINALS: Venus Williams rallied to beat Caroline Garcia of France 6-7 (3), 6-2, 6-3 in Singapore and become the oldest women’s finalist at the year-end tournament.

In the other semifinal, Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark beat Karolina Pliskova of Czech Republic 7-6 (9), 6-3 to set up a championship match against the American.
