Why should voters choose “yes” on Question 3 and “no” on Question 4 on the municipal ballot this year? The answer, for my wife, Jennifer, and me, is clear: While we live and raise a family in North Deering, we are residents of the city of Portland, and we share a responsibility to every student in the city and not just to the children and the schools ours happen to attend.
Voting “yes” on Question 3 puts to rest over 20 years of inaction and finally puts to bed the flawed logic that our elementary schools, if left alone, can rot enough to reach a high enough ranking on the state funding list.
These are the ballot choices that do not gamble with the educational future of yet another generation of families in Portland and ensure the parity of education and facilities to all elementary school students across the district.
