LOWELL, Mass. — Chris Forney scored on a power play with 8:44 remaining Friday night to give UMass-Lowell a 3-2 victory against Maine in a Hockey East men’s game.

Emil Westerlund scored twice for Maine (2-5, 1-2), including opening the scoring 10:01 into the second period unassisted. The River Hawks (4-5, 1-4) responded less than two minutes later on a goal by Colin O’Neil.

Westerlund scored his second goal less than two minutes later from Rob Michael and Chase Pearson to make it 2-1, but UMass-Lowell tied it again at 18:24 on a goal by Ryan Lohin.

Rob McGovern made 24 saves for Maine.

The Black Bears will play at Lowell again Saturday night, then take a two-week break before a home series against Boston University.

The second game of the series, on Nov. 18, will be played at the Cross Insurance Arena in Portland.

UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 8, JOHNSON & WALES 4: Tyler Seltenreich scored twice, Jeff Eppright had three assists and the Nor’easters (1-0) scored five goals in the second period to beat the Wildcats (0-2) at Biddeford.

Brady Fleurent of UNE broke a 1-1 tie 1:29 into the second period from Dylan Bengston. Christian Rossetti, Seltenrich and Eppright then scored during a five-minute span, pushing the Nor-easters’ lead to 5-1 with seven minutes to play in the period.

Seltenrich put in his second goal with less than two minutes remaining in the second to make it 6-1. Max Rasberg and Brett Mecrones each added third-period goals for UNE.

HOBART 8, SOUTHERN MAINE 1: Jordan Haskell had two goals, and Mike Faulkner, Lawson MacDougall, and Zach Sternbach each added a goal and an assist as the Statesmen (2-1, 1-0 New England Hockey) defeated the Huskies (0-1, 0-1) at Gorham.

Alex Pantalone scored for Southern Maine in the second period to reduce the deficit to 4-1.

PACIFIC 3, MAINE 2: Kriekie Van Wyk scored twice, including the winning goal in the 67th minute from Savannah Burns, as the Tigers (10-8) beat the Black Bears (12-6) in an America East quarterfinal at Lowell, Massachusetts.

Van Wyk scored 3:07 into the game and Rylee Comeau made it 2-0 at 19:30

Libby Riedl scored for the Black Bears to make it 2-1 in the 40th minute, then tied it at 58:51 from Casey Crowley. Van Wyk put Pacific ahead less than 10 minutes later.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY

UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 3, NEW ENGLAND COLLEGE 2: Julianne Sheehan scored the go-ahead goal from Tatum Gietl at 7:10 of the third period as the Nor’easters won an opener at Henniker, New Hampshire.

Marykate Drinkwater scored 9:59 into the game to put the Nor’easters ahead 1-0 but the Pilgrims responded 17:35 into the second on a goal by Brittany Tierney.

Sheehan’s go-ahead score put UNE up 2-1 early in the third, and Jessica Tolzman added a goal 13 minutes in to extend the lead.

Caty Flagg had 29 saves for the Nor’easters.

PLYMOUTH STATE 5, SOUTHERN MAINE 0: Brooke Maggy, Amber Thomas, Sydney Linnick, Jaime Carpenter and Lauren Van-Martin scored as the Panthers (1-1, 1-0 New England Hockey) defeated the Huskies (0-2, 0-1) at Plymouth, New Hampshire.

Whitney Padgett and Britney Evangelista combined to stop 45 shots for USM. Emelie Lindqvist had 19 saves for Plymouth State.
