HEBRON (AP) — Police have charged a Maine hunter who fatally shot a woman with manslaughter.

Thirty-four-year-old Karen Wrentzel, of Hebron, died of a gunshot wound at the scene, where she was digging for gemstones on her property. The shooting happened on Oct. 28.

The Sun Journal reports police charged 38-year-old Robert Trundy, also of Hebron, on Tuesday. A sworn affidavit written by a game warden says Trundy said he saw what he thought could have been part of a head or antler of a deer. The affidavit also says Trundy acknowledged he never saw the outline of a deer.

The shooting happened on the first day of deer hunting season for Maine residents. Trundy’s attorney says the shooting was an accident and Trundy wasn’t reckless.
