WOOLWICH

Woolwich Tax Collector and Deputy Town Clerk Katie Johnston was appointed interim town clerk by the Woolwich Selectmen Monday, following the resignation of former Town Clerk Mary Howe.

“Mary resigned and got us through the election — did a fabulous job during the election — but it just wasn’t the right fit for her,” said Town Administrator Suzette Cloutier. “Her last day was Veterans Day.”

Howe came into the town office over the summer following the retirement of longtime Town Administrator Lynette Eastman and Town Clerk Janice Bradford. During the staffing changes in the aftermath, then-Tax Collector Cloutier was named Town Administrator while Howe and Johnston joined the office as town clerk and tax collector, respectively. Cloutier was the most senior administrative staff in the office at the time, having been hired approximately a year earlier.

Before coming to Woolwich, Howe was the deputy town clerk in Freeport.

The board of selectmen has already selected their next town clerk: Chelsea Lane of Bath. Lane will start December 4, but in the meantime the town is required to appoint an interim town clerk.

“The Secretary of State’s Office insists that we have an interim town clerk until the new person starts,” said Cloutier.

Johnston was appointed to the interim position Monday evening, and will hold the additional position at the office until Lane officially comes on board.
