The Maine Warden Service has identified the man shot in a deer hunting incident Saturday afternoon in Oxford as James Footman, 32, of Paris.

Footman was shot by another man in his hunting party around 2 p.m. Saturday. Cpl. John MacDonald of the warden service said Sunday that officials are questioning a 21-year-old man from Oxford in the shooting. MacDonald said that Darcie Bolduc, 38, from Oxford and her 12-year-old son were also in the hunting party.

The shooting occurred in the woods about a quarter-mile off Number Six Road, near the intersection with Plains Road, according to MacDonald.

Footman suffered serious wounds to his arms in the shooting, MacDonald said. He was flown to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. A nursing supervisor at the hospital said she was unable to release any information about Footman because she had not talked to his family early Sunday. Emails and phone calls to CMMC later Sunday seeking information on his condition were not returned.

Wardens are expected to meet with the Oxford County District Attorney’s office to determine whether any charges will be filed in the shooting.

MacDonald said the shooter’s name will be released if he is charged. He also said that details about the clothing worn by the hunting party is evidentiary and won’t be released immediately. That’s apparently a reference to a requirement that hunters wear blaze orange clothing or vests while hunting.

Saturday was the last day of the hunting season for deer in Maine with most types of firearms.
