BRUNSWICK (AP) — Maine’s Bowdoin College says it’s going to open classrooms to a small number of students whose education has been disrupted in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Bowdoin College invited students to enroll in the spring semester, and will cover their tuition, room and board, books, winter clothing costs, and transportation to campus.
A spokesman said a “handful” of students will be accepted because of limited classroom capacity.
Bowdoin is part of a small group of colleges and universities across the United States that have set up visiting semester programs after Hurricanes Irma and Maria caused heavy damage in the Caribbean.
The deadline for students to apply is Monday, Dec. 18, 2017.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
