This August 2013 photo shows an old granite quarry now used as a summertime swimming spot on Vinalhaven Island. Granite was a major industry on the island in the 19th and early 20th centuries, with the stone used in bridges, monuments and buildings around the country. The quiet quarry, framed by evergreens, is one of many scenic spots on Vinalhaven. The island is reachable by a 75-minute ferry from the coastal town of Rockland.
