LEWISTON (AP) — A former Maine college student has been fined $400 for a 2014 assault that left an 82-year-old man with a broken hip.

Mac Jackson, 24, received the fine after pleading guilty to assault and criminal trespass.

Police discovered the former Bates College student in the now-deceased man’s home near the Lewiston campus after responding to a report of a burglary. Police say Jackson pushed the man down after he opened his door.

Authorities say Jackson was “highly intoxicated” at the time, and he believed he had arrived at his own home.

Jackson’s lawyer says his client left Bates shortly after the assault and returned to his home in Oregon to undergo substance-abuse and psychological counseling.

The lawyer says Jackson “is on the right track.”
