Red Claws falter down stretch in loss to Reno
Matt Jones gave Reno the lead for good on a layup with 53 seconds left and the Bighorns went on for a 118-113 win over the Maine Red Claws in the NBA G League Showcase Thursday afternoon at Mississauga, Ontario.
Marcus Williams hit a 3-pointer with 16.2 seconds left to make it 117-113, and Cody Demps capped it with a free throw with 5.9 seconds left.
The Red Claws led 34-22 after one quarter after making six 3-pointers, including three by Anthony Bennett.
Georgios Papagiannis and Aaron Harrison each scored eight points in the second quarter for Reno as the Bighorns rallied for a 63-57 lead by halftime.
L.J. Peak led Maine with 23 points, followed by Bennett with 22 and Kadeem Allen with 20. Bennett also had a game-high 11 rebounds.
The Red Claws will play their second game of the Showcase at 4 p.m. Saturday against Memphis.
GOLF
PGA: Chris Kirk finished strong, making three birdies over his last four holes for a 7-under 63 and a share of the first-round lead along with Zach Johnson at the Sony Open in Honolulu.
Jordan Spieth wasn’t quite so fortunate. Spieth hit trees with four shots on the par-4 eighth hole – his 17th of the round. He wound up with a quadruple-bogey 8 and finished with a 69.
Johnson, who played in the afternoon group, made seven birdies and no bogeys.
OLYMPICS
MEN’S HOCKEY: USA Hockey named David Leggio and Brandon Maxwell as the final two goalies for its Olympic team, hoping their experience in Europe and international play makes a difference.
Leggio and Maxwell join a team that already includes Ryan Zapolski, who is expected to be the starting goalie.
SKIING: Austria’s Roland Leitinger will miss the Pyeongchang Olympics next month after injuring his right knee during free skiing.
Leitinger, who won silver in giant slalom at the world championships last year, will undergo surgery after tearing his ACL in a crash in Austria.
Leitinger says “there is never a good moment for an injury but this is incredibly bitter.”
TENNIS
SYDNEY INTERNATIONAL: Former world No. 1 Angelique Kerber continued her strong start to the season, advancing to the semifinals with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Dominika Cibulkova in Australia.
